We Don't Have Cable

We Haven't Had Cable Since 2006

And we don't miss it.

In 2006 after my parent's business didn't work out they had to cut costs and cancelled our cable. At first I was kind of sad. There goes nights of mindlessly channel surfing when there's nothing to do. But I quickly got used to it and started borrowing DVDs from friends and the library.

Now we can watch our favourite television shows online, and movies too. There is no need for cable. We don't sit in front of the television like zombies any more. No more mindless channel surfing. We have our favourite shows, we hear of a good sounding movie and we watch it. Not having cable eliminates so much wasted time.

Sidney Has Never Had Cable

My daughter has never known cable. We only had cable for about 2 months when we first moved into our apartment because of the previous tenants cable hadn't run out yet. She was only one year old at the time and doesn't remember.

Last week Nick, Sidney and I stayed at my older sister's place to watch my niece while she was in the hospital having her baby, a beautiful little girl! My sister and her boyfriend love cable. So we got to live like "normal" people for a couple of days and watched  nonstop television shows. It was a fun vacation, but in the end I don't miss it (very often).

What's a Commercial?

The funniest thing happened while staying at my sister's house. We had put some kid channel on the television for the girl's to watch. I don't even know what channel it was, or what show it was; some cartoon or other. A few minutes into the show Sidney runs up to me and says, "Mommy! The channel changed and I didn't even touch the remote. Help me get my show back on." And when I went over to see what she was talking about I realized it was just a commercial. Sidney had never seen a commercial before that day and had no idea what it was!

She got used to them quick enough though as they advertised McDonalds, Fruit Roll Ups and toy after toy. And every commercial I had to listen to, "Mommy I want that! Can I get that? Mommy look! I want it!"

Let's just say I'm glad to not have cable.

And another good thing about having no cable, my daughter doesn't have a clue who Justin Beiber, Selena Gomez or One Direction is.

Do you have cable? Pros and cons of having cable?

Thanks,

Day 5 Blog Challenge - Favourite Movies You Never Get Sick of Watching

31 Day Blog Challenge - March

I have to admit, I am a huge movie fan. I love watching movies just as much as I love reading books. I love movies from every genre. I love movies that make me think, and movies that don't. To pick a list of movies I never get sick of watching could be a long one, but I'll try to keep it short and just pick just nine.

Top Nine Favourite Movies (that I don't get sick of):

  1. American Beauty
  2. Fight Club
  3. The Devil Wears Prada
  4. Shaun of the Dead
  5. Girl Interrupted
  6. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  7. This is England
  8. Trailer Park Boys
  9.  Wayne's World
And basically any movie with Adam Sandler in it, except for that Zohan movie which I didn't like at all.

I mean, I love a lot of other movies but these are just the ones I don't get sick of watching. Like, I love 1930's gangster movies, and 1950's horror movies but I couldn't watch the same one over and over again. Same with pretty much every animated Disney movie, especially Pixar.

Check out my previous challenges:

P.S. - I can't believe I forgot Moulin Rouge! I want to watch it right now.

Metric Concert!

http://ilovemetric.com/

Last night my hubby Nick and I went to see Metric at the ACC (Air Canada Center) in Toronto. Metric has been one of my favourite bands for a few years now, and I finally got to see them play live! And to be honest, it was everything I had hoped for.

Emily Haines was so energetic, so talented and so entertaining. The lighting was awesome to watch, but not too blinding like some other concerts I’ve been to. Everything was just perfect!

I think it’s important to go out every now and then with your significant other, child free, no friends or family. Nick and I don’t do it very often, but when we do it’s nice to be able to sit down and catch up on everything. Just getting out of the city took a lot of the pressure off my shoulders that has been building up. I felt like I could breathe again (even in the big(ger) city).

  • We got into Toronto shortly after five o’clock, and there was no traffic!
  • We managed to find a parking spot right nearby.
  • It was only a five minute walk to a nice Irish pub where we had dinner,
  • then walked a bit further to another enjoyable pub for a couple drinks.
  • We found our seats easily, which were pretty good seats!
  • Our seats were on the end, so we didn’t have to squeeze past anyone, I hate having to squeeze past people.
  • And luckily we only had a couple sitting directly in front of us, and they weren’t standing and jumping around like the rest of the crowd so we could stay sitting, too.

Sometimes things just work out amazingly, and last night was one of those nights. It felt so good to be able to go out and enjoy ourselves. It’s not very often I buy myself anything, but I’m sure glad I bought those concert tickets on a whim during the summer. I guess now and then you have to spoil yourself.

Thanks,
