We Don't Have Cable

We Haven't Had Cable Since 2006

And we don't miss it.

In 2006 after my parent's business didn't work out they had to cut costs and cancelled our cable. At first I was kind of sad. There goes nights of mindlessly channel surfing when there's nothing to do. But I quickly got used to it and started borrowing DVDs from friends and the library.

Now we can watch our favourite television shows online, and movies too. There is no need for cable. We don't sit in front of the television like zombies any more. No more mindless channel surfing. We have our favourite shows, we hear of a good sounding movie and we watch it. Not having cable eliminates so much wasted time.

Sidney Has Never Had Cable

My daughter has never known cable. We only had cable for about 2 months when we first moved into our apartment because of the previous tenants cable hadn't run out yet. She was only one year old at the time and doesn't remember.

Last week Nick, Sidney and I stayed at my older sister's place to watch my niece while she was in the hospital having her baby, a beautiful little girl! My sister and her boyfriend love cable. So we got to live like "normal" people for a couple of days and watched  nonstop television shows. It was a fun vacation, but in the end I don't miss it (very often).

What's a Commercial?

The funniest thing happened while staying at my sister's house. We had put some kid channel on the television for the girl's to watch. I don't even know what channel it was, or what show it was; some cartoon or other. A few minutes into the show Sidney runs up to me and says, "Mommy! The channel changed and I didn't even touch the remote. Help me get my show back on." And when I went over to see what she was talking about I realized it was just a commercial. Sidney had never seen a commercial before that day and had no idea what it was!

She got used to them quick enough though as they advertised McDonalds, Fruit Roll Ups and toy after toy. And every commercial I had to listen to, "Mommy I want that! Can I get that? Mommy look! I want it!"

Let's just say I'm glad to not have cable.

And another good thing about having no cable, my daughter doesn't have a clue who Justin Beiber, Selena Gomez or One Direction is.

Do you have cable? Pros and cons of having cable?

Thanks,

  1. Yes, we don't have cable.

I really don't miss it anymore. At first it was hard because I wasn't able to watch my favourite shows.

Now we can watch whatever we want whenever we want on Project Free TV but I really only watch one show on Sunday nights.

I don't miss the commercials, the up to date news on tragedies, the six o'clock news or the mindless channel surfing.

We have complete control over the shows the girls watch.

I definitely do not miss cable - or the bill.

    1. There are a lot of benefits to having cable. Actually, a lot of my friends don't have cable any more either. Everyone just uses the internet.

  3. We do have cable. The funny thing is we rarely watch TV. This has made me rethink our need for it. Seriously... I can get all that I need on the net. :-)

  4. We gave up direct tv a few years ago. Using Netflix and Hulu for our tv now we pay a fraction of the price and watch what we want when we want to watch it.

  5. I've thinking of cancelling cable for a few months now. I've already stopped some less watched channels but after reading this I think I'm going all the way.

  6. We have cable but just the basic (local) channels. I saved $50 a month from dropping basic cable to just local. I mainly keep the cable for the internet package.

  7. Hi! Just found your great blog from Freedom Fridays. We do have cable TV because my hubby and son are sport's fanatics. They wouldn't know what to do without it. LOL I also have my internet through our cable so I play on my computer and they watch sports. Ha If left up to me, I could totally do without the cable.

New bloglovin and GFC follower. We are hosting a bloglovin hop if you would like to join the party. Happy Friday!!

  8. I just want to HUG YOU! I swear I could totally do without tv of any sort. I hate it. IT DOES turn people into a zombie. There is SO MUCH MORE to be done, had, read and watched than to sit on your ass like a drone.

I only know two channels 250 and 260. Disney and Disney Junior. Benji has a couple of shows that he loves and frankly, sometimes I really LOVE the break that Mickey Mouse Clubhouse provides. :)

    1. Ha ha! There really is a lot more to do rather than television. But you're right, it can provide a nice break. :)
