Reasons Why Anyone Can Enjoy Photography

Too many times I hear or read comments from people who think that the only way you are allowed to like photography is if you’re a professional, have gone to post-secondary or some other form of training and already know all the technical stuff that goes with it.

It’s disappointing because I really enjoy photography. As a complete amateur I usually have NO idea what I am doing when taking pictures. Just over the past couple of months I’ve been teaching myself how to adjust the shutter speed and aperture, that‘s how little I know. I’m not a math or science person, which makes that part of photography incredibly difficult for me to learn.

It just makes me really sad that there are so many people out there who make fun, or look down on people trying to learn the art of photography by themselves or simply do it for enjoyment.

So I started thinking a lot about why some people like photography and it turns out there are so many different reasons!

This is why I like photography:

  • Capture moments worth remembering
  • Express yourself creatively, use as a creative outlet
  • Slow down and notice the beauty in things
  • To show people your perspective and how you see things
  • Share, connect and story tell
  • To provoke emotions, make people think and question things
  • Get a closer look, to help educate and inform
You don’t need a fancy degree or diploma to enjoy photography. You don’t have to fully understand how to use your camera and all of it’s settings. You don’t need to be considered a professional or an artist.

Don't get me wrong though, I do think that going to post-secondary or having training in anything, even photography, is a huge accomplishment that people should be proud of! There is no shame in getting an education, or continuing to learn something you're passionate about. And there is definitely no shame in making a living doing something you love!

Just take pictures, and enjoy yourself!

What do you like about photography?

Here are a few pictures I took with a slow shutter speed while swinging at the park with Sidney and Nick:

Did I know what I was doing? Not at all! Will everyone like these pictures? Ha! Obviously not! I was just swinging away and having fun and ended up liking how they turned out.

  1. I hope I don't come across as one of the photographers you described. I never hope to be that way. Yes, I did go to photography school. Do I use photography as a means of significant income...uhh not even close! I went because I wanted to learn how to use my camera to the best of my ability. I also learned a lot of editing with Photoshop. I needed the structure of someone telling me what to shoot on what settings before I felt I could set off on my own. I went through school and I still really just shoot for enjoyment. What I did find out in school, though, was I really love food photography and architecture photography. People not so They move around too much. I always encourage people to pick up a camera. I love that 5 people could photograph the exact same thing and walk away with 5 very different images because of perspective. I am always willing to share my knowledge. I am getting together with my cousin's wife in a couple of weeks so I can help her with stuff she has questions about. I honestly hope I never become one of those pretentious people who think I am better than everyone because I went to school for it. If you ever have any questions on photography, I am always willing to help. What kind of camera are you shooting with? I have two Canons so I am very familiar with those. I have shot with Nikon as well, just not as much.

    1. No, you've never come across that way! Going to school, or becoming a professional photographer are both huge accomplishments that I hope to one day be able to do. I think your picuters are great looking!

I love that about photography, too, when you can get completely different pictures of the same thing.

As of right now I'm using a Nikon D60. One day, when I make more money, I would like to buy different cameras, lenses and other gear, but for now I enjoy my camera. Thanks for offering to help with any questions :)

  2. P.S. I would totally consider myself as an artist and not as a professional.

  3. I definitely don't consider myself a great photographer, but I've always loved taking pictures. I'm all about documenting life and there's no better way than to take out the camera and take pictures.

    1. Me too! My photo albums are beginning to overtake my bookshelf.

  4. i love your photos... my view is that they are a way to share a part of your SELF and i appreciate that. Thank you.
Just dropping in doing a little Bloglovin' reading:) Hope you have a great day!

    1. Thank you :)

I agree, it is a great way to share a part of yourself

  5. Absolutely LOVE this! I am a professional wedding and portrait photographer but I didn't go to school. I created my own school and am self-taught. I studied just as hard and practiced as if I were in school, had other professional help me along the way before starting my business. I know all the formulas for calculating the "perfect" exposure, but most of the time; I go with what feels right in the moment. I was actually just out with a friend of mine today who has a wonderful eye for photography to help her learn just like I did and blossom. Photography isn't just a degree it's a talent, a passion and a source of enjoyment. :-) That's what shines through the best work!

I'm visiting from and the Mom's Monday Mingle. I'm one of the co-hosts this week and am so happy you joined us. I am following via your social media. Have a great week!

    1. Thank you Faith :)
