Weekly Wishes #5: Start Writing More

Last week I must have set a few too many goals for myself, because I barely accomplished anything! For one, I only managed to workout on Thursday. My eating habits haven't been very good, but I blame that on not having many groceries in the house until today. I am so sick of vegetable soup and pudding! And, the one thing I really wanted to get done, my blood work, I didn't. Therefore, I'm still pretty tired all of the time.

I did manage to clear out the rest of the clutter and have my yard sale. Didn't make as much as I had hoped but at least all of that stuff is gone.

This was a very unproductive week.

However, I want to continue to try and eat healthier and to workout three times this week. I might as well keep this goal on my Weekly Wishes list for the rest of my life.

This week I want to mix things up a little bit.

And so for my Weekly Wishes #5 I want to: Write More!

A couple of years ago I decided I wanted to go ahead and chase my dream of becoming a writer, but I haven't been feeling very inspired lately and I can't seem to write anything. There are ideas I have in my head but whenever I sit down to write about them, my ideas seem silly or stupid and I can't get past the first sentence.

I really enjoy writing. It usually doesn't matter that I'm not very good at it. Still, I need to learn how to keep writing even when I feel silly or stupid.

So this week I want to make sure that I start writing more. I want to write every day, because you can't be a writer unless you write.

What are some of your goals for this week? How did you do last week? Hopefully better than me!

Thanks,
Cole

P.S. - I haven't been taking any pictures lately for the August Break 2013 because my DSLR camera lens is still broken. No fun!

  1. Wait--You had a yard sale and worked out--in the same week? That's a win my friend! Ha-ha! Don't sell yourself so short...

On writing--The hardest part of starting, is just starting. Don't get discouraged if your writing feels silly. It just a draft and the more you write, the better you'll get at expressing yourself. I say keep going until you catch your stride!

Buena Suerte with your goals chica!

    1. Thank you :) Yard sales do take up quit a bit of time on their own.

It is difficult to start, but what you say is definitely true - the more you write the better you get at expressing yourself.

      Thanks for the encouragement!

  2. What a great picture! And I think writing more is ALWAYS a good goal. I just got one of those "5-Year Journals" where you answer one question every day for five years. It's a great way to get just a few sentences down on pen and paper every single day. :) Good luck!

    1. Thank you!

That 5 year journal sounds really cool! I've been keeping a journal for years, it's a great way to write every day.

  3. "You can't be a writer unless you write." Yes yes YES. Such true words. The more you write, the more you improve. I have to remind myself this whenever I set out on any creative endeavor. It can be so hard not to be discouraged! You can totally do it!

    1. Thank you for the encouragement! Any creative endeavor can be difficult, there really are no rules or guidelines to follow. Maybe for me too much freedom to choose what I want to do can be intimidating.

  4. Great job on the yard sale! It must be such a relief to have all that clutter out of your house, right? Also, I am in the same boat as you in not eating as well as I should since I have NO groceries in the house because I just moved. Just keep writing even when you don't feel like you are doing any good because you are probably just being hard on yourself. I usually find that I do the best writing WHEN I feel stupid because it means I'm going out of my comfort zone and pushing myself beyond my limits. So maybe feeling stupid is where your magic might happen. :)

    1. It's such a relief! Moving can be such a chore, I don't blame you for not eating as well as you should. I know from experience :)

I am definitely my own worst critic. I think that must be it! I'm forcing myself out of my comfort zone. I'm trying to write more honest, opinionated pieces and sometimes it feels risky - like I'm scared what people will think.

Thanks for commenting :) Your comment has inspired me to keep going and to TRY and trust my writing even though it feels silly.

  5. Awesome with the yard sale! I have to admit, I had a ton of stuff I set aside for a garage sale and then ended up donating most of it just because I was getting so overwhelmed! I hope that you can write as much as you want this following week- I know how hard writers block can get but I'm sure that once you start writing something simple it will keep growing into something larger. At least, that's what usually ends up happening with me.

    1. Yard sales can be overwhelming. If my Grandma hadn't been over so often last week to kick my butt into gear I probably would have ended up donating most of my items as well :P

Thanks for the advice! Start small, and let it grow into something bigger - I like that!

  6. I really feel ya on the writing thing. Sometimes it is just so hard to get started. I often find myself avoiding starting to write, but sometimes when you just force yourself, the words come. And other times they don't, but you just have to keep putting yourself in the situation to make it happen. I once heard an artist say that if you want to write well, then you need to become someone, which he then said you do through reading, finding out what you truly believe, and then getting out of familiarity. I don't necessarily think you have to become "someone" to be interesting, but I have always liked this advice.

At any rate, I hope that this goal goes well for you this week!

    1. Yes, I DO need to force myself! Something I've never been good at, making myself do things when I don't feel like it.

That is pretty good advice. The past few weeks I've been reading like crazy, trying to understand myself more and forcing myself out of my comfort zone.

      Thank you!

  7. I appreciate the write more goal. I've heard that every writer has at least one brilliant story somewhere inside them. The challenge is discovering it, and telling it well. I think writing total crap is good practice. So excited to hear / read what you're working on.

  8. Hey Cole! :) Even if you didn't reach all of your goals for last week, it still sounds like it was super successful!

And I know what you mean about the writing thing. I find that it's best to maybe not concentrate so much on what's coming out, but just write and try to turn off that negative self-critic voice. Because it being awesome or perfect? That's what editing's for! :))

What kinds of things are you trying to write? Fiction, non-fiction, articles, stories? :)

Good luck this week with writing! And remember that it's fun! (I forget that sometimes!)

    1. Ha ha, I think I forget that it's fun sometimes, too. I stress myself out to much on being perfect when I can't even get close to perfect.

I've been trying to write anything. Even trying to write blog posts seems difficult lately. But I'm also trying to write articles. I keep reading that Journalism students should be writing articles often, and submitting them to get published while they're in school. Which all makes sense but I can't seem to get any good ideas.
