Day 4 Blog Challenge - Best Childhood Memory

31 Day Blog Challenge - March

Best Childhood Memories are of Camping

When I think about my childhood I have a lot of fond memories. My family was by no means rich money-wise but we always knew how to have a good time.

We used to go camping a lot as a family. I can't pinpoint just one camping trip over the rest of them because they were all equally fun and memorable.

Blue Water Lakes Childhood Memories

There were three places we went to often. One of them was called Blue Water Lakes. My aunt and uncle had a trailer there but it's seriously the best trailer park I've ever been to. It's surrounded by thick forests, with a man-made lake full of fish and a dock to jump off of. They have peddle boats, canoes and kayaks you can rent and there's always some sort of activity going on like darts or horse shoes. My cousins, sisters and I loved playing there as children, and getting into trouble as teenagers. Now I take my daughter camping there almost every year.

Sand Hills Park Childhood Memories

The other place we used to go to is called Sand Hills Park, named after the giant sandhills that are there. As children we loved to climb up the hill and roll down it, jump down it, slide down it. It didn't even bother us to be covered in sand the entire time we were there. Other than the sandhills there wasn't a whole lot to do. The only way to get to the beach was to climb over the hills, so once we got over there we would stay on the beach almost all day. The water was clear, and the waves were huge. It was a lot of fun.

The third place wasn't even a campsite. My Grandma used to drive us 8 hours up north to go camping. Once we got there it was another half an hour motorboat ride to this little island on the lake. There were no people, no bathrooms or hydro. You could wake up in the morning and see a moose across the lake on another island. We even saw a bear the one time. It was so much fun camping there; the stars were amazing. However, you couldn't leave your tent after the sun went down because there were so many mosquitoes, so my cousins, sisters and I would roll around the tent giggling and driving my Grandma insane every night. Unfortunately we don't have many pictures from this time - just some water damaged pictures taken with a disposable camera by me as a ten year old.

After Sidney was born I knew that I had to take her camping as often as I could. It's funny, because Nick had never been camping as a child other than staying at his grandparents trailer. I had to show him how to set up a tent, start a fire, cook on a fire, and everything else that comes with it.

Anyway, I know I didn't exactly follow the challenge but I really couldn't pick just one memory!

  1. I didn't just pick one memory either - too many fond memories of my childhood to choose just one! Sounds like you had a fabulous childhood :) I was a camper, too, with my dad. Good times!

  3. We have a park near us called Sand Hills but it looks nothing like yours. Ours is just flat with sand LOL But we are in Kansas and I would climb those hills in a heartbeat to get to the beach. Wonderful memories

  4. I didn't camp growing up, but my husband's family did. Our 1st camping trip as a family with our own children was to one of the parks he camped at often as a child. Now it's fun memories on many levels. Camping is one of our very favorite activities.

  5. Great memories! Looks like fun camping trips. It's so great that you can share camping with your daughter now. I went camping a few times as a kid and I can't wait to try it out with my daughter. Even if it just starts out with sleeping in a tent in the backyard! Camping on the beach is popular here so I definitely want to do that too.

  6. Camping at my grandpa's cabin has created so many great childhood memories, which is strange when I consider how that northwest Montana location has now become the subject of a the ghost story I am writing.

    1. Staying in a cabin is a lot of fun. And I love ghost stories!

I actually wrote a short horror story that took place at Sand Hills.

  7. Most of my memories were of moving from town to town for my father's job. Donuts on the mornings of the moves were especially nice!

  10. I think it is great that you didn't break tradition. Camping can be a lot of fun and showing your daughter is amazing. I never experienced camping much as a kid but your description is so vivid.

  11. Great memories. I used to love going camping when I was younger and I think it teaches kids a lot too. Sounds like this campsite is the perfect place to spend time as a kid and be outdoors (which is something kids these days definitely need more of!).

  12. So pretty, love the pictures! I loved camping as a kid and still love being outdoors to this day! My parents weren't really into camping so the only time I got to camp was with friends. My hubby and I have started going camping more last year, it's our couple bonding time. We go near the Spicer Reservoir in Tuolumne County. It's great to take kids camping because they learn SO much from nature and you get to create memories. :)

Camping does teach children a lot! My parents didn't like camping either, but luckily my Grandma did. Growing up with frequent camping trips taught me to appreciate nature and being outdoors.
